  Modem Settings and Diagnostics

A lot of times connection problems are the result of faulty hardware (Actual physical components in the computer such as your modem, the device used to connect your computers to other computers.) and not a settings problem at all. If you get an error stating that the modem could not be detected or no dial-tone could be detected it's most likely a hardware error, or you don't have the phone line hooked into the right place on the modem. The first thing to do is look at the back of the computer and be sure that your phone line isn't connected to the place that says "Phone" on your modem. Most modems come with two ports that you can plug the phone line into, one says "Line" and the other says "Phone". You want to make sure that it's plugged into the one that says "Line".

If this is how your modem is hooked up, then you will need to be sure that your modem is working properly, this is done by going to your modem diagnostics. This is a utility built into windows that gives us information about your modem and will tell us if it's working properly.
